About · Gennaro Maida

A progression, not a pivot.

The career arc from biomedical engineering and clinical research through physical systems, sensing, healthcare technology, and evidence-governed AI.

Applied AI Architect | HealthTech Strategist | Independent Researcher

Each stage carried its instruments and habits into the next. DeNovo Innovations Group is the applied research, systems-development, and strategic platform behind that identity.

The work runs from biomedical and clinical foundations through infrastructure, controls, networking, sensing and IoT, to connected health, clinical informatics, cloud security and applied AI, with healthcare technology at the center. The problems are not medical, though. Every discipline is hitting the same wall at the same time: which source is authoritative, what was true and when, whether a control actually works, who decided and on what evidence. I work on those problems outside healthcare as well. If you recognize them in your own field, let's solve them together.

From electrons to evidence

Seven layers, worked at first hand

Medicine first, then every layer of infrastructure it runs on, then the data, the models and the AI systems that reason over them. Every layer below is work performed, not a reading list; failures live at the seams between layers, and that is where I look first.

  1. 01Medicine & clinical researchBiomedical engineering; cardiothoracic surgery outcomes research; three years of clinical training
  2. 02Electrical & physical systemsPower distribution and controls during the decommissioning of an automated distribution center; sensing hardware built by hand
  3. 03Networks & connected environmentsDistrict-scale wireless infrastructure; unified communications for manufacturers; IoT and control systems for intelligent buildings
  4. 04Sensing & edgeCamera-based vital-sign rigs on edge compute, integrated with robotics and deployed in the field
  5. 05Data & cloudSecure Microsoft 365 and Azure environments for clinical research; least-privilege identity; hashed, timestamped evidence of system state
  6. 06Machine learningSleep-disturbance detection from wearable signals; rPPG heart-rate and breathing-rate extraction from webcam video
  7. 07AI systems & evidenceRevision-aware policy retrieval; a production generative-AI platform; public comments to NIST and FDA on evaluation evidence and provenance

How I think

Four habits, every discipline

Medicine, infrastructure, IoT, research, devices, reimbursement, trials, commercialization, AI: the problems rhyme, and these habits travel.

  1. 01Start from ground truthEvery fact carries its source, revision and effective date. A system that cannot say what changed is guessing.
  2. 02Keep inference separate from measurementA sensor's raw signal and a model's summary are both followed by layers of estimate. The boundary stays visible to the person deciding.
  3. 03Verify the verifierA passing test is evidence only once it has run against the intended system and could have failed.
  4. 04Collect the evidence the claim needsWithin consent, privacy and retention limits. You cannot go back for the data you did not capture.
